People looking for home improvements they can make this year should think about having striped carpets installed.
This is the claim made by one expert, who suggested such flooring can “look fantastic on staircases” and works well as such areas tend to “get the hardest wearing”, though the pile of chosen carpets should not be too thick as this can be “a bit dangerous” when it does not go over the bullnosing properly.
Carolyn Parker, an interior designer who runs her own company based in Yorkshire, also advised people to go for “a practical colour” when choosing carpets, adding: “Often the middle range shades – the natural colours – [are most practical], because they don’t show the bits [of dirt].” The homes specialist also stressed that dark coverings will show up everything, while wool can be a practical choice of material as it is easy to clean.
Individuals seeking flooring specialists in Yorkshire or other parts of the country may also wish to take into account recent comments by faculty director in architectural interior design at Inchbald.co.uk Alan Hughes, who suggested that colour will play a central role in decorating this year. People looking for ways to bring their properties up to date, they could opt for carpets in a striking hue as well as those sporting a stripe.
Mr Hughes advocated “strategic use of colour” when designing living spaces stressing that homeowners should ensure that they “like a colour immediately and instinctively”, but also pointed out that it “needs to hold its appeal over time”.
Those moving into new homes may be particularly in need of home improvements and could be looking to change carpets.
More people could be looking to change their property after figures published by property search website Zoopla.co.uk showed that it has witnessed a record number of visits to its website and the highest use of its mobile apps over the first half of this month.
A total of three million visits were made to the site in the second week of January 2012, with more than 450,000 recorded in one single day and Zoopla founder and chief executive Alex Chesterman said he hopes it is “an early indicator of overall market interest and increased market activity”.
