Correct 40mm shower waste pipe fittings

Posted by Kieron Murphy, on
Please help I'm totally confused. I am in the process of replacing my existing leaking shower tray. The existing 40mm plastic waste pipe located beneath the wooden floor is mainly a solvent (glued weld) type pipe but with added compression fittings between the end of the solvent waste pipe and the bottom of the shower waste. I was not happy with the existing compression fitting attached to the solvent pipe and purchased a replacement 40mm threaded coupling ABS WS32 which has a solvent pipe fitting at one end and a compression fitting at the other. I thought I could simply glue weld the solvent end of the coupling to the existing solvent 40mm pipe and then attach a McAlpine 1.5" flexible pipe that I have already purchased to the other end of the coupling then this would attach to the shower tray waste by a compression fitting at the other end of the McAlpine flexible pipe. However, I have now discovered that although the solvent end of the coupling fits to the end of the existing solvent pipe, the compression fitting at the other end does not fit to the McAlpine flexible waste pipe. Why is the compression end of the coupling not a standard size to fit a 40mm waste pipe? How can I get around this problem? Any advice would really be appreciated as it is doing my head in!
