Hi Julie Totally agree with Craig sounds a bit dodgy i do a lot of patios 100mm type1 is more than enough or type3 if you require it too be permeable and make sure the slabs are layed on a full bed of sharp sand and cement not spotted like you see on tv and if i was you get some more quotes shawn slb, brickwork
Hello Julie, For a patio you shouldn't require either of these as you're only going to have pedestrian traffic. A sub base of compacted type 1 with a thickness of 75-100mm is recommended for patios and garden paths and 100-150mm for driveways and public footpaths. In your case go for 150mm deep which will be more than adequate. Reinforced steel mesh and reinforced concrete are only required in foundations for buildings you definately DON'T require them for a patio. Unless there's more to your job than you've described it sounds a little dodgy. When receiving quotes for any construction work make sure you're provided with: The contractors address and landline number (never only accept a mobile). A written quotation with a detailed description of what's included (never accept only a verbal quote). If possible addresses of jobs they've done in the local area. Also only pay a deposit of between 20-25% and don't pay any more until you're happy with the finished job. I recommend you post the job on rated people to receive three quotes from tradesmen and then you'll also have testimonials from previous clients to look at when deciding who to employ. I hope this helps and good luck, Craig
