Lime mortar

Posted by Charlene Davies, on
I have what I think is regular gypsum plasterboards for an old Victorian house which appear to be like mortar and now crumbly old brick. I need to damp proof it. Can I use mesh membrane and allow the brick to breath beneath? Does the entire thing need to be lime rendered so the bricks won’t trap moisture? Can I do a mix of lime mortar renovation plaster direct to brick, then a layer of permanganate mesh then plaster board just to give the brick more depth to breathe with moisture? Do I discard the plaster board and just lime plaster it completely? Just want to know if it’s safe to put plaster board over delicate brick that is already crumbling and has damp coming through, and if I apply mesh directly to brick I am not giving it chance to breathe?
