Cold room above the garage - does the garage need to be converted?

Posted by JAY FLETCHER, on
WE HAVE AN EXTENSION ABOVE THE GARAGE THAT WE WANT TO USE AS A BEDROOM. THE ROOM IS VERY COLD IN WINTER AND TOO COLD FOR SOMEONE TO SLEEP IN. WE HAVE TWO RADIATORS IN THE ROOM (ONE AT EACH END OF THE ROOM) BUT WE DO NOT HAVE THE HEATING ON OVERNIGHT AND THE ROOM IS COLDER THAN OTHER ROOMS WHEN THE HEATING IS off (AND WHEN IT IS ON). I WANTED TO ASK IF IT WOULD BE POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO ADVISE US IF THE ONLY WAY TO RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM IS TO CONVERT THE GARAGE TO A ROOM TO PREVENT COLD AIR COMING IN THROUGH THE GARAGE DOOR? IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE WE CAN DO TO MAKE THIS ROOM WARMER? Thank you for your help Jaime

With garage below getting rooms to be warm can be challenging, you need to look at insulation and drafts. You can add insulation between the floor boards and ceiling below but you must maintain ventilation here are you will get condensation build up, you can over board the garage ceiling with insulation such as kingspan while appearing excessive up to 200mm would make a huge difference. Also make sure that there aren't any gaps for cold air in the garage to get through into the floor space above as these create cold drafts. You should be able to make that room habitable for a lot less than doing the garage conversion
