Advice for fixing aluminium doors to Steel beam

Posted by Joe Feldhaus, on
Hi We’re currently having an extension built and some aluminium French doors installed. There was a small gap around 25mm between the door frame and the RSJ/steel lintel?. The company who installed the doors said the aluminium frame cannot be installed directly against the steel RSJ as it sweats. They have instead put a 15mm piece of plywood between the doors and the RSJ which protrudes out, they said so our builders can attach the plasterboard to it. To be honest it’s a bit of a mess and our builders are not happy with the installation, the plywood that protrudes outward isn’t even that sturdy. They say that there should be another piece of aluminium attached along the top of the door frame (an extender) screwed directly into the steel, leaving us with more room for the plasterboard without covering up the frame (right now we would be covering most of the door frame once plasterboard and plastered although it would affect opening and closing the doors). can you provide advice on what is correct? Can the aluminium be screwed directly onto the RSJ with no gaps and if not, what is the usual process for installing doors like this and securing them? thanks in advance
