Hi Rachael. Go for the decorator. Get them to strip the paper first, if the walls are passable, then line and paint, if the walls are poor and possibly falling apart, then look at getting a plasterer

Rachael an old house bringsthe territory of old walls personally I would follow richard before doing i would strip a small section that looks rough.depending on the amount of paper coverings if you go passed 3 types of papers stop and call a plasterer as I sure you will haveproblems if you do it your self, love to tackle the job but out of Uk on vacation.

Hi Rachael all depends on the damage after the wallpaper is stripped, Will you be stripping the wallpaper yourself. Sometimes people can get carried away with steamers and if there is damage to the wall underneath the steam can make it worse
