Fixing coat hook on wall

Posted by Josephine Cheang, on
Hi. I wish to fix a 60cm long coat hook (with 5 hooks )on the wall of my flat. But I'm not sure if the wall is hollow or concrete. If it's hollow, it may not support the weight of the coats hanging on it. How to know whether the wall is hollow or concrete?

All good answers here - I'd locate where your going to fix the Hanger and drill through with a Long 80mm long drill bit make sure it masonry so if you encounter brick it will tackle it and not make a mess of the wall by jumping around. Carefull about drilling into walls where cable and pipes 'may' be use a stud/cable/pipe finder if you can... the radar ones are best but really pricey - £200-600. I also recommend a good quality SDS Drill. When you remove the drill you should see material from the wall stuck to it.... Grey Light/ Dark - Concrete/Breeze/Ash block (Soft easy to work with) Red/Yellow - Engineering brick. Usually hard (you should feel this as your drilling) brick types vary in density/toughness. If your drilling in plasterboard remember there might not be much room between the board and the Wall, so you'll need to use a suitable wall plug for plasterboard different style fixings have different Weigh loads for then from 5Kg-15Kg for hanging TV's on walls. Internal walls are usually Plaster board unless old ans external walls are usually Brick sometime covered with plasterboard. As Cornelius said if you can locate a stud by sounding it in or using stud finder. That's always you best option, not always an option. it takes time & experience to know, as lots of factors contribute to a correct 'guess'. Good luck...

find where you are going to fix it knock a small nail through the plaster there may be a gap behind the plasterboard maybe almost an inch behind that there will be brickwork or concrete which can be drilled into and fixed to but if you fix it dont tighten the screws too much or you will crack the plasterboard

Hi Josephine, If you knock on the wall you should hear if the wall is hollow. If the wall is solid the sound is tubby. Sometimes even if the wall sounds hollow, that doesn't mean that the wall is not solid (especially the external walls) but the plasterboard sheets are fixed onto the solid wall with adhesive. If the wall is hollow, you can still find the metal/wood studs you can securely attach you hook onto or you can use heavy duty plasterboard fixings.
