Difficult fixing point

Posted by Iona Gray, on
Hello, I am trying to sink a load bearing fixing into a Bressumer beam. The beam is lath and plastered and it's a bit of a mess. The coating seams to be really thick and I'm having trouble finding the beam. I am intending to hang a punch bag from the beam so I need it to be well mounted. I am looking for some advice. Can I use really long screws and screw through the lath and plaster into the wooden beam? As long as I sink the screws deep enough will that be a secure hold? Hopefully this makes sense. Many thanks for any advice, I've done lots of DIY but this has stumped me.
