Floating Mantel Installation

Posted by Jordan , on
I live in an old house with an old brick fireplace. The firplace is no longer functional and has been bricked in a well. I'm wanting to install a floating mantel purely for asthetics. I have a salvaged 4x4 I would like to use. It's about 46" long and weigh's about 30 pounds. I was looking into some if the ways I might install it, but I have hit a bit of a snag. The fireplace is so old, all the mortar is sandy and flimsy. The brick appears to be in better condition, but not by much. My question is, is there anyway I might be able to install this mantel without destroking the fireplace?

What would you like to do now?
