Came & gave quote, said could start Monday the following week, comes Monday messaged to say he can't start till Thursday, comes Thursday I messaged to ask if he's still OK to start, hear nothing from him till Friday when he messaged to apologise & could start next again week, very blaise when messaging saying its lucky I can just change when I can work & I'll get round to it like I'm not a paying customer hiring him to work when I require it, next again week comes around & I hear nothing again.

I received a message late the night before you were due to start work that had been pre-arranged 2 weeks prior. No explanation, just see you Saturday. There was no consideration that your client has things to do as you say at this "busy festive period." A call earlier in the day explaining your situation would have been better. You should not have agreed to do the work if you were too busy and having to squeeze me in! My recommendation to you is to brush up on your customer service skills.
I am a sole trader, painter and decorator who is time served with approximately 30 years experience in the trade. Having worked onsite painting newly built homes these require a high standard of finish and now this is reflected into all aspects of my work to date which is also done quickly and efficiently with competitive prices.
