Flat Roof - Installation / Repair

Good honest tradesman, reliable and trustworthy. It was refreshing to meet someone who was willing to offer ideas and thoughts as to what we needed and what would work most effectively. So glad we went with this company. Would use again and would definitely recommend.

          Slate & Tiled Roof

We feel very lucky we chose Aidan Roberts / Schooley and Bradford Slate and Tile for our complete re-roof. We worried about the cost of the job going up once the work was underway if they found lots of rotten spars etc, but in fact, the entire job remained at the original price even though half way through the job we asked them to re-roof an extra section of roof that we hadn't asked for when they gave their initial quote – very generous. Aidan and Tony took great care at all stages of the work to explain what they needed to do and what the potential risks were. We really appreciated their honesty regarding how messy it would be (on their request we stayed elsewhere during the initial stages of removing all the slate as we have a newborn and a toddler and the 100-year old plaster dust is nasty stuff). They also made it clear from the start that they couldn't know in advance how much damage might be done internally during the work, since the plaster was so old. Aidan was diligent and patient about keeping us informed as the job developed, and checking we were happy with the work at every stage. Aidan, Tony, Gary and Matt were friendly towards the children, and very understanding and accommodating of our family life, which had to go on around their work. Tony went out of his way to ensure our home lives were affected as little as possible, eg having the back yard swept regularly so that Elsa could play out there safely and offering to get the scaffolding down early on one side so that I could get in and out the house more easily. Tony even fed our tomatoes for us while we stayed elsewhere! They tried very hard to minimise the mess inside the house, always removing their shoes before going upstairs to check progress (mostly they worked from outside and used the scaffold). The scaffolders were pretty rude (a separate company), but perhaps they’re cheap and that’s part of keeping the price down, and they were only around briefly. However, it seems they removed the lock from our neighbour’s gate to gain access whilst they put the scaffold up instead of asking me if I had a key, which I did. When they came to remove the scaffold, they didn’t say hello even though we were sitting right by the window, but simply commenced work, and cut our washing line to do so, even though it could have been easily untied. They left bits of red and white tape over the front yard. All small things, but all quite unnecessary – a very contrasting quality of service and care than what Aidan and Bradford Slate and Tile offer. Tony clearly has many years of experience as a roofer, is proud of his work and is absolutely meticulous, and never cuts corners – its great to know a perfectionist has rebuilt our roof! He knows all the relevant current legislation, and there was never any question over whether the job should be done according to council regulations. He wouldn’t have considered doing the re-roof without putting in insulation since it’s a legal requirement. There was a problem just as the work was completed because the Council Inspector sent a very delayed letter saying he couldn’t sign a certificate because the insulation did not meet current standards. This was obviously very worrying, as we would need the certificate in order to sell the house in future. There was a perfectly good explanation for not having more insulation, and we had been kept informed of this at that stage of the job – they had inserted as much as they could possibly fit within the space they had. They had also shown the council inspector the problem and informed him what they planned to do, and had been given no indication that he felt it was insufficient. Tony and Aidan took our concern about meeting the regulations and getting the certificate very seriously and immediately organised to meet with us to discuss it, finally arranging for a more senior inspector to visit and advise how we could meet regs using insulated plasterboard internally. The job took quite a bit longer than we’d hoped, due to inclement weather and various other unforeseeable issues, but again, Aidan communicated very efficiently with us throughout, so that we understood the reasons for this. Also, we appreciated that Aidan and Tony had been honest with us at the outset that they couldn’t anticipate exactly how long the work would take. Tony insisted that we retain a chunk of the fee and wait for a downpour to ensure there are no problems with the new roof, guttering, or chimney stacks. Their quote was not the most expensive but not the cheapest either. We feel confident that the work is excellent quality, and that we now have an excellent roof, well worth what we paid for it. We believe we made absolutely the right choice and would heartily recommend Aidan and Bradford Slate and Tile as reliable, honest, hardworking, highly skilled, meticulous and friendly professionals.
