To discover which nursery décor choices are set to be the most popular in 2022, we analysed thousands of Pinterest boards and Google search data for over 150 nursery trends, including colour schemes, landscapes, animals and decorative elements. The number of boards and the search volume in 2021 were combined to create an overall trend score, which was then used to rank the trends and predict which trends are likely to be the most popular next year.
Relaxed, nature-inspired designs with soft palettes dominate the top 20 most popular styles, and star-themed nurseries are set to take the top spot as the most popular theme for decorating nurseries in 2022.

Our research shows people are quite literally shooting for the stars when it comes to nursery decoration this year, with star-related designs proving the most popular for 2021. Nearly 1,000 Pinterest boards feature nurseries with star decorations, and more than 260,000 searches were made this year for inspiration and information on twinkling star themed rooms for children.
Sky themed nurseries feature in second place, followed by woodland nurseries in third, proving natural landscapes are a popular trend for 2021. Other nature inspired nursery trends that are proving popular on Pinterest are rainbows, sunshine and forests.
As you’d expect, beloved fictional characters from children’s books and films are another popular theme for nurseries, with Disney characters Winnie the Pooh and Moana making the top 10, and Harry Potter, Star Wars and Peter Rabbit featuring in the top 20.
Elsewhere in the natural world, animals are providing wonderful inspiration, with elephants and dinosaurs both featuring in over 1,000 Pinterest boards.
Forests, jungles and enchanted forest themes also rank highly in the top 20 most popular nursery design choices of 2021, and when it comes to colour schemes, gender-neutral green is the top choice this year – people are searching for green nurseries on Google and adding them to more Pinterest boards than other colour.
The most popular colours for nurseries in 2021
Gone are the days when the only options were pink for girls and blue for boys. With 1,101 Pinterest boards and almost 50,000 Google searches for green nurseries, the calming nature-inspired colour is a favourite for children’s bedrooms this year. Perhaps surprisingly, striking black is the second most popular colour – often paired with soft and natural wood tones and natural materials like macrame, it can actually provide a soft and calming nursery design.
Following green and black, neutral-themed nurseries are in third place and soft pink coloured rooms take fourth. In fifth, it’s a summertime sunshine yellow.
The most popular animal themes for nurseries in 2021
Animals are traditionally a popular choice for children, and elephants are leading the pack for nursery room inspiration this year, with just under 25,000 Google searches and over 1,000 Pinterest boards. Dinosaurs follow closely behind in second, and fish, dogs and pandas make up the rest of the top five.

Whilst stars are the most popular decorative trend for nurseries in 2021, vintage style bunting, floral patterns, pom poms and macramé are also trending. Bunting has been pinned in 237 Pinterest boards, and there have been over 15,000 searches for bunting in relation to nurseries.
The most popular fictional character themes for nurseries in 2021
Popular across generations, Winnie the Pooh and Peter Rabbit are trending in the top five fictional character themes for nurseries this year, ranking first and fifth respectively. Science fiction and adventure characters are also front of mind when looking for nursery inspiration, with Harry Potter and Star Wars also making the cut, whilst tropical-themed inspiration comes from the inspiring and empowering Disney film Moana.
The most popular landscapes and weather themes for nurseries in 2021
As we’ve seen in multiple areas, bringing things back to nature is a popular choice for nursery design this year. Woodland and forest themed nurseries are ranking highly. Sky, sunshine and rainbows also make the top five landscape and weather trends, brightening up nurseries with colourful yellows, blues and multi-coloured rainbows.
The most popular fairy tale themes for nurseries in 2021
Combining nature and magic, enchanted forests are amongst the trending fairy tale themes for 2021 nurseries, with 17,800 Google searches and 252 Pinterest boards created, including mystical woodlands. Unicorns, mermaids and princesses are all highly searched for and pinned, as they can help to create a light-hearted, imaginative atmosphere in a nursery.
The most popular transport and vehicle themes for nurseries in 2021
Continuing the popularity of sky and star related themes, hot air balloons and rockets are adding a dash of colour to nurseries this year. Pinned in 14 Pinterest boards and searched for on Google nearly 20,000 times, hot air balloons are providing plenty of inspiration for children’s bedrooms. Closer to the ground, cars, trains and tractors make up the rest of the top five trends.
The most popular sports themes for nurseries in 2021
Team sports dominate the sports themes this year and with 4,930 Google searches for rugby nurseries, the sport takes the top spot. Baseball is a close second, followed by football, hockey and cricket.

Methodology
We collated a list of the 150 most popular decoration themes for nurseries, consulting authoritative home and property media. We then calculated the number of Pinterest boards for each and calculated Google search volume using Google AdWords Keyword planner.
The number of Pinterest boards and the search volume was then combined to create an overall trend score, which was then used to rank the trends.
