Expected cost for adding more sockets to a garage consumer unit.

Posted by Simon Chapman, on
I have a garage with its own consumer unit that has two 16amp breakers (one for light, other for power). Its a modern house built 3years ago. The garage has only one double socket. Im looking to add a further 3 double sockets spread around the garage. Walls are all bare blockwork so wiring and sockets can all be surface mounted. Also considering a socket on the outside of the garage if its not too much extra. Im in the Nottingham area. How much can I expect to pay for supply and install? Thanks, Si

Hello Simon, On a 3 years old garage you should have an consumer unit with the RCD protection. The light circuit must be protected by 10A or 6A MCB. Not 16A circuit breacker. The surface mounted electroinstallation is cheaper and quicker. £45 per point is common price. The material is depend of type of the installation. Metal conduct, pvc ducting or pvc mini trunking or directly clipped on the wall. The metal conduct is the most expensive version of installation. The directly clipped is the cheapest. When the RCD is present then a outside double socket can be used and cost is around £20. After work must be done appropriate paper work. The price of that may be add on the top. Ondrej

Hi Simon I would usually say around £50 a point but this does depend on location and materials used.As for the outside socket it will probably need to be a rcd outside socket which are quite expensive around the £40-£50 before your even charged to fit socket. Hope this of help to you. Many thanks Stuart wright
